A routine service call turned into an unusual wildlife rescue after Mississauga Animal Services (MAS) successfully freed a python that had become trapped inside the engine compartment of a vehicle.
The unusual incident occurred on July 13, when a resident contacted a mechanic after discovering a snake hidden beneath the hood of a vehicle. The mechanic then alerted Mississauga Animal Services, whose officers responded to the scene.
According to MAS, one of the responding officers carefully reached into the engine compartment in an attempt to retrieve the reptile.
To everyone’s surprise, the python remained calm and slithered directly onto the officer’s arm, allowing it to be safely removed without injury to either the animal or the rescue team.
Animal Services said the snake was found to be dehydrated and had sustained minor scratches, but was otherwise in good condition.
The python was transported to the Mississauga Animal Shelter, where it is receiving veterinary care and recovering under the supervision of animal welfare staff.
Mississauga Animal Services praised the professionalism of its officers, noting that their work extends far beyond responding to calls involving traditional household pets.
“Calls like this show how ready our officers are for anything—from pets to exotic animals—all to keep our community safe,” the agency said in a social media statement.
Officials have not indicated how the python ended up inside the vehicle, and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unknown.
The successful rescue highlights the diverse challenges faced by municipal animal services officers and their preparedness to respond safely to unexpected situations involving both domestic and exotic animals.
