Province Advances Plans for Ontario Place Transformation into Year-Round Family Destination

Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure, shared an update on the province’s progress in transforming Ontario Place.

“Following last year’s landmark agreement with the City of Toronto, the province is moving forward with its vision to make Ontario Place a world-class, year-round destination. This includes expanding parks and public spaces, enhancing waterfront access, creating a new public marina, and introducing family-friendly entertainment options.

Concert enthusiasts will be excited to hear that our government is collaborating with Live Nation to develop a modern, year-round concert venue at Ontario Place. The new amphitheatre will increase capacity to up to 20,000 people, while preserving the beloved amphitheatre lawn.

Earlier this month, Infrastructure Ontario initiated a Request for Qualifications to start the procurement process for a team to design, build, finance, and maintain the new state-of-the-art Ontario Science Centre. This new facility, located on the mainland of Ontario Place, will feature approximately 15 percent more exhibit space than the current location. It will offer interactive spaces for families, students, and visitors to enjoy the latest exhibits and science-based educational programming, along with a modernized Cinesphere and Pod complex.

To ensure the Ontario Place redevelopment proceeds smoothly, our government has issued an enhanced Minister’s Zoning Order (eMZO). This planning tool will grant development permissions for new and existing land uses at Ontario Place. The eMZO will allow the province to manage site plans for portions of the site and make necessary improvements to the publicly accessible open space on the East Island, as well as expand public spaces and parks on the West Island.

Ontario Place will encompass more than 50 acres—equivalent to almost 40 football fields—of free public parks, beaches, and green spaces. With the addition of the new Ontario Science Centre, Therme Canada’s year-round wellness destination, and the updated Live Nation concert venue, Ontario Place will offer a variety of experiences for people of all ages to enjoy.”
