Protests Escalate in Mississauga and Brampton: Roads Closed, Tensions High

Ongoing protests have once again shut down major roads in Brampton, just days after violent clashes erupted, resulting in arrests and the suspension of a Peel Regional Police officer. Peel Region Police have declared the latest gathering an “unlawful assembly,” deploying the Public Order Unit after reports of weapons within the crowd.

At 12:50 a.m. on Tuesday, authorities confirmed that the demonstrators had dispersed and reopened affected roadways, but police remain on high alert, closely monitoring the situation.

Monday night saw large groups of protesters blocking The Gore Road in Brampton, intensifying tensions surrounding the controversial Khalistan movement. Demonstrators clashed over a global nonbinding referendum advocating for Punjab’s separation from India to form a Sikh state. The protests also targeted Indian Consulate officials who had visited to offer administrative services, sparking outrage from the group Sikhs For Justice.

Peel police officers on-site worked to manage traffic, keeping northbound lanes of The Gore Road open while southbound lanes were heavily congested. Protesters directed their frustration toward law enforcement, chanting slogans like “Peel Police, shame on you,” and demanding government intervention against Khalistan supporters.

The recent surge in violence led to the arrest of three individuals: Dilpreet Singh Bouns, 43, charged with causing a disturbance and assaulting a peace officer; Vikas, 23, charged with assault with a weapon; and Amritpal Singh, 31, charged with mischief over $5,000. They are set to appear in court in Brampton at a later date.

With rolling closures expected to continue, Peel Regional Police are urging drivers to proceed with caution and seek alternative routes.
