Prime Minister, Mayor Condemn Islamophobic Attack on Ottawa Bus

Prime Minister Mark Carney has denounced what he called a “reprehensible” assault on a young Muslim woman aboard an Ottawa bus, describing it as an unprovoked act of hate that has no place in Canada. The incident occurred Monday afternoon near March Road and Teron Road when a man attacked a woman wearing a hijab, making Islamophobic threats and slurs.

According to the Kanata Muslim Association, the attacker whispered a slur, slapped the victim, and threatened to slam her face against the window and kill her before getting off at Penfield Drive. The association says the same man may have targeted other hijabi women in the past.

Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe also condemned the assault, saying such violence and hatred must not be tolerated and that everyone should feel safe travelling on public transit or anywhere in the city. He has spoken with the victim’s family and local Muslim leaders.

Ottawa police have launched an investigation, with the Hate and Bias Crime Unit taking the lead. The suspect is described as a white man in his 20s or 30s, about 5’8″, with a thin build and beard. Authorities urge anyone with information, photos, or videos to contact them.

OC Transpo has reminded passengers to report any incidents immediately to transit staff, special constables, or by calling 911 in emergencies. Police say they are committed to holding those responsible for hate crimes fully accountable.
