Prime Minister Calls U.S. Tariffs ‘Unacceptable’ at International Summit

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has pledged a firm response to the Trump administration’s decision to impose a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum, calling the move “unacceptable” and “entirely unjustified.”

Speaking at an international summit in Paris, where he met with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, Trudeau emphasized the deep economic ties between Canada and the United States, urging Washington to reconsider its position.

“Tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum would be entirely unjustified,” Trudeau told reporters. “We are the [United States’] closest ally. Our economies are integrated.”

Trudeau confirmed that his government will work with the Trump administration in the coming weeks to ensure it fully understands the economic impact of the tariffs on both sides of the border. However, he stopped short of confirming whether Canada would impose dollar-for-dollar countermeasures.

On Monday evening, Trump followed through on earlier threats by signing an executive order imposing 25 per cent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports, including those from Canada. The tariffs are set to take effect on March 12.

When asked whether Canada would respond with reciprocal tariffs, Trudeau remained measured but resolute.

“If it comes to that, our response will be firm and clear,” he said. “We will stand up for Canadian workers. We will stand up for Canadian industries.”

With tensions escalating, Canadian officials are expected to engage in diplomatic discussions with their U.S. counterparts in the coming weeks, seeking a resolution that protects key industries and the livelihoods of thousands of workers on both sides of the border.
