Premier Doug Ford visited the new Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) School of Medicine in Brampton to mark a significant milestone with the unveiling of the school’s sign. The event was attended by Premier Ford, Health Minister Sylvia Jones, TMU President Mohamed Lachemi, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, and Brampton-South MP Sonia Sidhu.
The TMU Brampton School of Medicine, set to open in 2025, will be Ontario’s first new medical school in over 30 years. It will provide 80 undergraduate seats and approximately 95 postgraduate positions. The campus will feature modern facilities, including classrooms, labs, and a community clinic aimed at boosting local healthcare capacity.
“This is a significant achievement for our community,” stated MP Sonia Sidhu. “Very soon, our youth will be able to attend a world-class medical school to work in healthcare right here in Brampton.”
The $48-million building, donated by Brampton in 2023, is expected to generate over 7,000 direct and indirect jobs and between $1.2 to $2.6 billion in economic activity over the next decade. The medical school will also include a community clinic to address healthcare needs in Brampton.
“This is just one part of our government’s plan to train more nurses and doctors right here in Ontario and provide more connected and convenient care to people across the province,” added Amarjot Sandhu, MPP.
“This will have a positive impact on so many youth across Brampton, and I am already looking forward to meeting the doctors who will come out of this new school!” said Maninder Sidhu, MP.
“This milestone marks a new chapter in Brampton’s healthcare journey,” said Rowena Santos, Regional Councillor for Wards 1 and 5. “Our city is now at the forefront of medical education and innovation, which will bring immense benefits to our residents.”
Designs for the school by Diamond Schmitt Architects and Indigenous-owned Two Row Architect will transform the former Bramalea Civic Centre into a state-of-the-art educational facility. The new campus will also offer various amenities, including event and gallery spaces, a communal kitchen, and academic research offices.
The establishment of the TMU School of Medicine is a critical part of Brampton’s ongoing efforts to improve local healthcare infrastructure and education. The province also plans to add hundreds of new medical school seats across Ontario, including in Brampton.
