Premier Danielle Smith Rejects Criticism Over U.S. Meetings

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has strongly dismissed criticism over her meetings with U.S. officials and media figures, some of whom have made controversial comments about Canada. Smith defended her actions ahead of her planned trip to Florida, where she will attend an event hosted by an American podcaster known for mocking Canada as a “silly country” and suggesting its annexation as the 51st U.S. state.

Addressing the legislature, Smith refuted accusations of betraying Canadian interests, labeling such claims “treason” as exaggerated and unfair. She emphasized her intent to engage with American officials proactively to avert a potential cross-border tariff and trade conflict.

Invoking the words of British wartime leader Winston Churchill—”fear is a reaction, courage is a decision”—Smith stated her government is choosing courage in the face of criticism.

Smith has faced additional scrutiny for earlier comments about influencing U.S. officials to delay tariff actions until after Canada’s federal election, potentially benefiting her preferred party, the Conservatives.
