Premier Calls White House Adviser’s Remarks on U.S. Annexation Plans “Chilling”

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey described a recent statement from a top White House adviser as “chilling,” after the official reinforced U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial plans to pursue the annexation of Canada. Furey’s comments came following an unprecedented joint mission to Washington by all 13 Canadian premiers, aimed at countering Trump’s escalating tariff threats and protecting Canadian sovereignty.

Speaking to CPAC on Friday, Furey expressed deep concern over the White House adviser’s remarks, which suggested Trump is serious about making Canada the 51st state. “It was chilling to hear that,” Furey said, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. He warned that Trump’s actions represent not just an economic attack but a direct challenge to Canada’s sovereignty.

The premiers’ visit to Washington marked the first time in history that all provincial and territorial leaders traveled together to the U.S. capital for such a mission. Their goal was to present a united front against Trump’s aggressive trade policies, including his threat to impose a 25% across-the-board tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods. A lower 10% levy on Canadian energy exports is also under consideration.

Trump’s annexation rhetoric has added a new layer of tension to the already strained Canada-U.S. relationship. Last week, the president signed executive orders to impose a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports, including those from Canada, starting March 12. These measures, coupled with the annexation talk, have raised alarms among Canadian leaders about the future of bilateral relations.

Furey called for a reevaluation of Canada’s diplomatic strategy, urging a firmer response to Trump’s threats. “It’s time to revaluate the Team Canada strategy to ensure we draw a line in the sand,” he said. The premiers’ mission underscores the growing urgency for Canada to defend its economic interests and national sovereignty in the face of unprecedented challenges from its southern neighbor.

The White House has yet to provide further details on its annexation plans, but the rhetoric has sparked widespread concern across Canada. As tensions continue to rise, Canadian leaders are preparing for a prolonged period of uncertainty in their relationship with the United States.
