Pope Francis Battles Double Pneumonia, Remains in Good Spirits Amid Treatment

Pope Francis, 88, is undergoing treatment for double pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, a condition that has raised concerns given his age and history of respiratory issues. Despite the seriousness of his condition, the Vatican reports that he remains stable, is breathing on his own, and has been able to get out of bed and eat breakfast.

The Pontiff was hospitalized last Friday after a weeklong bout of bronchitis worsened. Medical tests confirmed that he is suffering from a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection, meaning a mix of bacteria and viruses in his respiratory system. On Tuesday, a CT scan revealed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, prompting intensive treatment with antibiotics and cortisone.

The Vatican has not provided further updates on how well Francis is responding to the medications, though officials have stated that he isn’t running a fever. Given his previous lung surgery—which left him with only one functioning upper lobe—his ability to fight off such infections remains a concern.

Medical experts warn that pneumonia in both lungs can be far more serious than a single-lobe infection, as it reduces the available lung capacity. Older adults with limited mobility, like Pope Francis, may struggle with clearing fluid buildup, making physiotherapy a crucial part of recovery alongside drug treatment.

Despite his hospitalization and the cancellation of his weekly audience, large crowds of pilgrims continue to gather in St. Peter’s Square to offer prayers for his swift recovery. Many are expressing their admiration for the Pope’s efforts to bring reforms to the Church, including his support for women’s roles in religious leadership.

At Gemelli Hospital, a rainbow appeared over the building on Tuesday afternoon, offering a symbolic moment of hope. Children from the hospital’s oncology ward have been sending the Pope get-well messages and drawings, while across the world, religious leaders and political figures have extended their well wishes.

While the Vatican has not confirmed how long Francis will remain hospitalized, officials say his treatment requires an “adequate stay” to ensure a full recovery. For now, the Pope continues to receive care under the watchful eyes of medical experts, with millions of faithful hoping for his swift return to the Vatican.
