PM Modi’s Kanyakumari Meditation Trip Sparks Silence Period Violation Claims

Congress Alleges Violation of Election Silence Period

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned 48-hour meditation trip to Kanyakumari has led to allegations from the Congress party that it violates the election silence period before the June 1 voting. The Congress has requested the Election Commission of India (ECI) to prevent media coverage of the trip, asserting that it breaches the model code of conduct.

A delegation of Congress leaders submitted a memorandum to the ECI, listing 27 complaints of alleged code violations by the BJP. They argue that Modi’s meditation at the “Dhyan Mandapam,” starting May 30, would be televised and violate the 48-hour silence period.

According to BJP leaders, Modi will meditate at the Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari, a monument dedicated to Swami Vivekananda. The meditation is set to take place from the evening of May 30 to the evening of June 1 at Dhyan Mandapam, where Vivekananda is said to have had a divine vision about ‘Bharat Mata’.

The Congress also accused other BJP leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, of violating the model code of conduct. They alleged that Modi’s statements at a rally in Patiala, Punjab, and Sarma’s appeals based on religion further breach electoral guidelines.

As the Lok Sabha elections approach their final phase, the ECI’s response to these allegations will be closely watched. The controversy underscores the heightened political tensions and the critical importance of adhering to electoral rules and regulations. ( Picture Courtesy ZEE News )
