Peel Police Explore Expanding Electric Fleet While Addressing Feasibility Concerns

Peel Regional Police are considering adding more electric vehicles (EVs) to their fleet as part of their commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, widespread adoption of EVs for patrol cars in Mississauga and Brampton may face practical challenges, officials said at a recent Peel Police Service Board meeting.

Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah highlighted the benefits of EVs in reducing emissions, noting that the force’s diverse fleet, including unmarked vehicles, provides opportunities for electrification. Still, he acknowledged that 24/7 patrol operations and stringent provincial standards make it difficult to fully integrate EVs into high-demand roles like patrol cruisers.

Deputy Chief Lauren Jackson reaffirmed Peel police’s commitment to aligning with the Region of Peel’s ambitious goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 45% from 2010 levels by 2030. She said efforts to electrify the fleet are ongoing, with EVs already being used for proactive policing initiatives. Plans also include exploring options for electrifying staff transport buses to further reduce the organization’s carbon footprint.

Board member Alan Boughton voiced concerns over the practical challenges of electrifying patrol vehicles, especially given the intense 12-hour shifts, reliance on power-hungry technology, and harsh winter conditions. He suggested alternatives, such as battery swapping, to overcome charging limitations.

Board Chair Nando Iannicca emphasized the need for robust infrastructure and a reliable electrical grid to support the transition to EVs, echoing the call for a measured approach.

Peel police have already taken significant steps toward fleet electrification. In 2022, the force introduced Ontario’s first electric police cruisers, piloting four fully electric Ford Mustang Mach-SR all-wheel-drive vehicles. The pilot project aimed to evaluate the feasibility of expanding EV use across the fleet.

The force has also been a pioneer in hybrid vehicle adoption since 2020, using marked Ford Interceptor hybrid electric police cruisers as part of their efforts to integrate green technology into daily operations.

Peel police’s ongoing electrification initiatives are part of a larger regional strategy to combat climate change and promote sustainable practices across Mississauga and Brampton.
