Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah has endorsed proposals to establish safety zones around places of worship in Mississauga and Brampton, aiming to prevent protests and ensure public safety.
Recent demonstrations outside temples in both cities have escalated into confrontations, prompting the need for protective measures. The initiative, championed by Mississauga Ward 3 Councillor Dipika Damerla and Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, seeks to make religious sites off-limits to protests to safeguard worshippers.
“Recent demonstrations across Peel Region, near or at places of worship, have raised significant public safety concerns, with some devolving into violence and criminal activity,” Chief Duraiappah stated in a letter to Mississauga City Council. “While we respect the right to peaceful assembly and expression, it is also important to balance this with the safety and freedom of community members to access and practice their religion at places of worship without fear.”
Chief Duraiappah emphasized that Peel Police will not tolerate intimidation, incitement, hatred, or violence, particularly around places of worship—key pillars of social infrastructure.
Recent events have highlighted the urgency of these measures. At the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton, a violent clash erupted during a demonstration by supporters of Khalistan, a movement advocating for an independent Sikh state. The following day, tensions escalated when a group associated with the Hindu temple attempted to march towards a Sikh temple in Mississauga. Police intervention prevented further violence but led to additional skirmishes. Demonstrations have also occurred at Westwood Mall in Mississauga’s Malton area.
To date, Peel Police have arrested four individuals and are reviewing video footage for potential further charges. The unrest reflects deeper divisions along ethnic and religious lines, with Sikh groups supporting the Khalistan movement clashing with Hindus backing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, which opposes separatism.
In response to these tensions, Peel Police have increased their presence around places of worship to reassure communities and deter violence. Chief Duraiappah’s support for creating designated community safety zones aims to ensure that worshippers can practice their faith peacefully.
Both Mississauga and Brampton councils must pass bylaws to enact these proposed restrictions, marking a critical step toward maintaining harmony and security in the region.
