Pedaling to Glory: Lael Wilcox Breaks World Record for Fastest Woman to Cycle the Globe

Lael Wilcox, an ultra-endurance cyclist from Alaska, has shattered the world record for the fastest woman to cycle around the globe. Completing the grueling journey in 108 days, 12 hours, and 12 minutes, Wilcox outpaced the previous record of 124 days set by Scotland’s Jenny Graham in 2018. Starting and ending her adventure in Chicago, she cycled an astonishing 29,169 kilometers (18,125 miles), crossing through 21 countries and four continents.

Wilcox’s ride, which saw her biking up to 14 hours a day, tested her physical and mental endurance as she tackled varied terrains, including Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. The Guinness World Records will verify her achievement, which requires cyclists to cover at least 28,970 km on their bike and traverse a distance equivalent to the Earth’s circumference, including any air or sea travel.

A pioneer in ultra-endurance racing, Wilcox had previously set records in the Tour Divide and was the first woman to win the TransAm, a 4,000-mile race across the U.S. Her latest feat adds to her impressive resume, making her a standout in the world of endurance sports. Throughout her journey, Wilcox chronicled her experiences with videos and podcasts created with her filmmaker wife, Rugile Kaladyte.

As she celebrates this monumental achievement, Wilcox may soon face a new challenger: 25-year-old Indian cyclist Vedangi Kulkarni, who is currently attempting her own global ride and aims to complete the journey in 110 days.

Both Wilcox and Graham’s accomplishments continue to inspire athletes around the world, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible for women in cycling and endurance sports.
