The grand opening of Pakistan’s largest thrift store in Karachi, dubbed “Dream Bazaar,” descended into chaos as a massive crowd broke into the store, vandalizing and looting it within minutes. Viral videos shared on social media show a large group of men, women, and children storming the store, leaving destruction in their wake.
According to ARY News, the store promised discounted prices on clothing, home essentials, and accessories, attracting over a thousand people. However, the store management was unprepared for the sheer volume of visitors and quickly lost control of the situation.
Footage from the scene reveals a crowd pushing through the store’s entrance and overwhelming the security measures. In one viral video, a man laments the damage, saying, “We promised the best deals. Look what they have done to ‘Dream Bazaar.’”
The incident, which unfolded within just 30 minutes of the store’s opening, has drawn widespread condemnation. Social media users criticized the lack of civic discipline, with one user commenting, “The country which has predominantly been ruled by the military has zero discipline in the civic way of life.” Another added, “The owner must be surprised, but we are not.”
Many called for better planning and security, with one user stating, “It’s unfortunate to see such an exciting development turn into chaos. While the intention behind offering special discounts was admirable, better preparation was clearly needed.”
The chaotic incident has sparked a debate about the country’s ability to manage large-scale events and the social implications of such behavior in public spaces.
