Ontario residents planning trips in 2026 are being urged to fully understand their travel insurance coverage before leaving Canada, as medical emergencies abroad can result in devastating out-of-pocket costs.
According to a recent Blue Cross travel study, many Canadians are choosing destinations such as the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe and Asia instead of the United States. However, Blue Cross warns that failing to review insurance policies carefully could leave travellers financially exposed.
A Blue Cross survey found that 83 per cent of Canadians are aware that an overnight emergency room visit outside Canada can cost more than $3,600. Still, gaps in coverage — particularly related to pre-existing medical conditions — remain a major risk.
CTV News previously reported on a 90-year-old Ontario woman who suffered a cardiac arrest while visiting Florida in 2023. Her insurance claim was later denied due to a pre-existing kidney condition, leaving her with a medical bill exceeding $290,000.
Sylvain Charbonneau, president and CEO of Quebec and Ontario Blue Cross, said travellers must read their policies closely and understand exclusions before departure.
“Know the exclusions, pre-existing conditions and any restrictions related to your destination or activities,” Charbonneau said.
He emphasized that travellers should be fully transparent when answering health questions and contact their insurer in advance to confirm coverage.
While the use of artificial intelligence for travel planning is rising — with nearly half of Canadians now using AI tools to plan trips and compare insurance quotes — Charbonneau cautioned that technology does not replace careful review.
“AI can help generate information and options quickly,” he said. “But it does not replace judgment.”
The Blue Cross study found AI use is highest among Gen Z and millennials, though adoption is growing across all age groups.
Blue Cross advises travellers that understanding insurance details before leaving Canada is the best way to avoid denied claims and costly medical bills while abroad.
