Ontario Residents Warned of Sophisticated Gas Utility Scam Masquerading as Enbridge

A new wave of scams is sweeping across Ontario, with fraudsters leaving fake Enbridge inspection notices at homes in an effort to steal personal information.

According to Enbridge Gas, the letters look official and claim the company will be conducting gas meter and pipeline inspections. However, the phone number listed is not connected to Enbridge. Homeowners who call are sent a follow-up text message requesting personal details — information that scammers then exploit.

Enbridge stressed that legitimate inspection notices are sent by mail, reference authorized contractors like GTEL or Hetek, and never request banking or personal information by text. The company is urging residents to ignore suspicious messages and verify all communications using the official website (enbridgegas.com) or customer service line at 1-877-362-7434.

This scam is the latest in a series of fraud attempts targeting Enbridge customers. Previous warnings have flagged fake websites and calls offering bill discounts, social media ads promising free energy kits, and spoofed numbers demanding immediate payments. Enbridge says these are all red flags and reminds customers never to click unknown links, scan QR codes, or share financial details.

Anyone who has received a fraudulent notice is urged to report it to Enbridge Gas, local police, or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 to help authorities track and shut down the scam.
