Ontario Police Warn: Don’t Cave to WhatsApp Extortion Threats

Police in Ontario are sounding the alarm, urging residents to stand firm against a wave of violent extortion schemes hitting WhatsApp users. The Caledon OPP’s Tuesday alert highlights a surge in cases where scammers use the messaging app to demand hefty payments under threats of violence.

This menacing trend, plaguing Caledon, Brampton, and Mississauga since at least December 2023, has racked up over 60 reported incidents. In some instances, the culprits text or call victims, flaunting details like home or work addresses to crank up the fear factor.

Though the threats pack a punch, the OPP is adamant: don’t pay up. “If you get one of these chilling messages, report it to your local police right away,” the force advised. “Then, log it with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca or call 1-888-495-8501.”

How to Shield Yourself from Extortion, Per the OPP:

  • Report It Fast: Alert police the moment a violent message lands.
  • Stay Cool: Scammers lean on scare tactics to grab your cash—don’t bite.
  • Question Everything: Unsolicited messages, especially threats or random debt claims, are red flags.
  • Don’t Engage: Ignore and avoid responding to menacing texts or calls.
  • Hold Your Wallet: Never send money under duress.

The stakes are high—police efforts in Brampton and Mississauga have nabbed 21 suspects, seized multiple firearms, and slapped over 150 charges on more than 20 individuals targeting South Asian residents and businesses.
