Ontario Moves to Enhance Road Safety with New Commercial License Waiting Period

Today marks a significant milestone in improving road safety across Ontario. I am proud to announce the tabling of my private member’s motion, calling on the Ministry of Transportation to implement a one-year waiting period after obtaining a Class G license before drivers are eligible to test for a commercial license.

This motion responds to concerns raised by the community, where road safety—especially on highways—has been identified as a top priority. By allowing new drivers to gain a full year of valuable driving experience before advancing to operate large commercial vehicles, we are ensuring that those behind the wheel are better prepared, more confident, and equipped to navigate our roads safely.

Prabmeet Sarkaria, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, expressed his support for the motion, stating, “Road safety is a priority for our government, and this initiative will ensure that all commercial drivers are well-prepared before they get behind the wheel of larger vehicles. We are committed to reducing accidents and making our highways safer for all Ontarians.”

Amarjot Sandhu, MPP, echoed these sentiments, adding, “This motion is a critical step in enhancing the safety of our roads. Ensuring that new drivers have sufficient experience before taking on the responsibility of driving commercial vehicles will make a real difference in reducing collisions and improving overall road safety in Ontario.”

This initiative is about protecting Ontarians, reducing accidents, and building a safer future for our families. I am confident that this motion will play a vital role in making Ontario’s roads safer, particularly as we continue to prioritize the safety of both drivers and pedestrians alike.

Together, we are making a commitment to road safety and to the wellbeing of all Ontario residents. Let’s build a safer future, one step at a time.
