Ontario Matches Federal GST Holiday with Provincial Sales Tax Relief

Ontario has announced it will match the federal government’s two-month GST holiday by temporarily removing the provincial sales tax (PST) on select items not already covered by existing rebates. The initiative aims to provide additional relief to Ontario families struggling with the rising cost of living.

Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy said the move, made after “extensive discussions” with the federal government, will deliver nearly $1 billion in savings to residents.

Dual Government Affordability Measures

The provincial tax relief comes alongside other affordability measures, including the $200 cheques announced by Premier Doug Ford last month. These cheques, set to be distributed to Ontario taxpayers early next year, were introduced as a response to mounting concerns over affordability.

The federal government has also introduced its own initiatives, including $250 cheques for Canadians who worked in 2023 and earned less than $150,000, as well as a two-month GST holiday.

Running from December 14, 2024, to February 15, 2025, the GST and PST holidays will apply to a range of items, including:

  • Restaurant meals
  • Diapers
  • Toys
  • Snacks
  • Video games

The timing is intended to help ease costs during the busy holiday shopping season and Valentine’s Day.

Mixed Reactions to Tax Relief

While many welcome the measures as a way to combat the soaring cost of living, critics argue that both the federal and provincial governments are using taxpayer money as political leverage ahead of expected elections. Critics contend that the funds could be better allocated to social programs targeting the most vulnerable populations.

Premier Ford and Prime Minister Trudeau have defended the measures, asserting that they are aimed at providing immediate financial relief for working families.

“Life has become too costly,” Ford said during his initial announcement, emphasizing that the tax relief measures are designed to make life more affordable for Ontarians.

What’s Next?

As both governments roll out their tax holidays and direct payments, the broader impact of these measures on household budgets and public opinion will likely shape the political discourse heading into election season.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the temporary tax relief for eligible purchases between December 14 and February 15.
