Ontario Liberal Party Launches Leadership Search Following Bonnie Crombie’s Resignation

The Ontario Liberal Party has formally begun the process of selecting a new leader following the announcement by Bonnie Crombie that she is stepping down.

On Sunday, the party’s executive council approved the creation of a leadership committee tasked with providing recommendations on the structure and process of the upcoming leadership contest. Party president Kathryn McGarry confirmed that the committee will engage with members across the province to help guide its work and ensure a transparent and inclusive process.

Crombie, who left her role as Mayor of Mississauga in January 2024 to take on the Liberal leadership, announced her resignation earlier this month after receiving limited support during a leadership review at the party’s annual general meeting.

Elected in late 2023 in a five-person race, Crombie led the party to regain official status in the provincial legislature during the most recent election. However, she did not win a seat herself, a setback that added to the leadership review outcome.

The Ontario Liberal Party will now look to chart a new course as it prepares for the next provincial election, with the leadership committee playing a central role in shaping that path.
