The Ontario government has unveiled plans for a substantial expansion of GO train services, marking the most significant increase in over a decade. This expansion will introduce more than 300 additional trips per week across key lines including Milton, Lakeshore West, Lakeshore East, Kitchener, and Stouffville, enhancing the daily commute for thousands across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
Premier Doug Ford emphasized the expansion as a cornerstone of what he described as “the largest public transit expansion in North America.” According to Ford, this move is set to revolutionize transit accessibility across the region, providing faster and more frequent service options. “Today’s announcement, along with our recent introduction of free transfers between different transit systems through One Fare, will help get people across the region where they need to go faster, while saving the average transit rider $1,600 every year,” Ford stated.
Beginning April 28, 2024, weekend train frequency will double during afternoon and evening hours on the Lakeshore West and Lakeshore East lines, with trains running every 15 minutes. The Kitchener line will also see a significant enhancement with the introduction of new 30-minute service intervals during weekdays.
Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation, highlighted the role of this expansion in supporting Ontario’s growing population. “As Ontario’s population continues to grow, our government is investing in a world-class transit network that connects communities and people to good jobs and affordable housing,” said Sarkaria. He further noted that the initiative is part of a broader plan to deliver more reliable and convenient transit services across the Greater Golden Horseshoe.
Additional improvements include increased evening services on the Stouffville line and new rush hour trips for Milton commuters. Furthermore, for those traveling to and from Pearson Airport, a more streamlined service will be available with every second UP Express train providing a non-stop 30-minute connection between Union Station and Pearson Airport.
Milton’s Mayor, Gordon Krantz, also expressed his support for the expansion. He emphasized the strategic importance of additional GO rail service trips in fostering economic growth, improving educational access, and advancing housing development along transit corridors. “Investing in GO rail service and infrastructure is critical to advancing Milton’s long-term complete community vision,” Krantz said, applauding the government’s commitment to a robust transit future.
