Oshawa, -An Ontario court has stayed firearm-related charges against Inderjeet Singh Gosal, bringing an end—unless reopened within a year—to a case stemming from a 2025 traffic stop in the province.
The decision was issued by the Ontario Court of Justice in Oshawa. A stay of proceedings means the prosecution has one year to revive the case; otherwise, the charges are effectively dropped.
Gosal had been charged alongside two others after police alleged a loaded handgun was found in a vehicle during a stop in September 2025. Charges against the co-accused were withdrawn earlier, and the case against Gosal has now also been stayed.
Following the ruling, Gosal said the removal of the charges and related travel restrictions allows him to continue his advocacy work. He has been publicly associated with Sikhs for Justice and is considered a close associate of Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.
This is not Gosal’s first interaction with law enforcement in Canada. He was previously arrested in connection with an incident at a temple in Brampton in 2025 and later released on bail.
The development comes amid a broader and sensitive context involving Canada–India relations, which have faced strains in recent years over issues related to Sikh separatist activism and investigations into the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. While the court’s decision is limited to the criminal proceedings in Ontario, it is likely to draw attention in both countries given the wider political backdrop.
Legal experts note that a stay of proceedings does not equate to a finding of innocence but reflects prosecutorial or evidentiary considerations. The case could still be reinstated within the statutory period if new developments arise.
