Ontario Breaks Ground on First Station of Scarborough Subway Extension

The Ford government has officially broken ground on the first of three stations planned for the Scarborough Subway Extension, marking a major step forward in one of Toronto’s most anticipated transit projects. A ceremony at the future Scarborough Centre Station on Friday brought together Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria, Infrastructure Minister Kinga Surma, and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow to celebrate the milestone.

“The Scarborough Subway Extension will be a gamechanger for the people of Scarborough, making it easier than ever before for commuters to get around quickly and conveniently,” Sarkaria said in a statement.

The three-stop, eight-kilometre underground route replaces the defunct Scarborough RT and is projected to open in 2030. Scarborough Centre Station, the first to begin construction, is designed to handle 10,000 passengers and more than 7,000 transfers during peak periods.

Originally announced in 2019 as part of Premier Doug Ford’s broader transit vision, the project has seen its estimated cost rise to $10.2 billion following new contracts. The province continues to describe the extension as a transformative investment in Scarborough’s future, promising faster, more reliable service for residents who have long called for better transit connections.
