New Grocery Store Set to Open in Mississauga Amid Redevelopment Plans

A new grocery store is preparing to open its doors in Port Credit, offering fresh food options to the community even as the plaza it will call home faces redevelopment. Sam’s Wow Fresh Market has put up signage at 170 Lakeshore Rd. E., a space formerly occupied by Planet Organic, which closed in February 2020.

While details about the new store remain scarce, signs indicate it will be “opening soon.” Residents have spotted activity inside the space in recent weeks, with workers busy preparing the location for its launch. It is still unclear whether Sam’s Wow Fresh Market will take over the entire footprint of the former Planet Organic store.

The store’s arrival comes as the plaza itself is slated for redevelopment, with its future uncertain. The site, which also houses Wingporium and Elmwood Meat Market, is part of a long-debated plan for a new apartment complex.

Initially proposed in 2022, the redevelopment plan faced significant opposition from local residents and city councillors, who raised concerns about the building’s height and impact on Port Credit’s village-like atmosphere. Originally designed as a 17-storey apartment tower with 148 units, the project was challenged at the Ontario Land Tribunal after city officials did not approve it.

Following negotiations between the City of Mississauga and developer Lightpoint Inc., a settlement was reached in January 2025. The revised plan scales the building down from 15 storeys (previously considered 17 with the rooftop) to 12 storeys while increasing the unit count to 173 residential rental units. Other adjustments include changes to building setbacks, a reduction in underground parking, and the inclusion of affordable rental units.

Despite the redevelopment approval, such projects can take years to complete, and businesses within the plaza—like the upcoming Sam’s Wow Fresh Market—could continue operating for some time before construction begins.

The City of Mississauga has yet to provide further details on the timeline for the redevelopment. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
