New Affordable Seniors Housing Project Reaches Major Construction Milestone in Brampton

BRAMPTON – A significant step forward in addressing the growing need for affordable seniors housing was celebrated this week as community leaders, government representatives, and project partners marked a major construction milestone at Basswood Senior Residences, a landmark development rising in Brampton’s Ward 5.

The topping-off ceremony, held at the Seniors Health and Wellness Village located at 527 Main Street North, marked the completion of the building’s structural framework and highlighted the continued progress of one of Peel Region’s most innovative housing projects. Once completed, the nine-storey residence will provide 198 affordable rental homes specifically designed for seniors, helping meet the increasing demand for accessible and affordable housing options in the community.

The project is being built on the same campus as the recently opened Peel Manor Long-Term Care and Primary Care Centre, creating a comprehensive environment where seniors can access housing, healthcare, wellness services, and community support all within one integrated location.

Regional Councillor Rowena Santos described the milestone as particularly meaningful during Seniors Month, noting that the project represents more than a new building. She emphasized that every roof symbolizes safety, stability, dignity, and belonging for seniors who have contributed significantly to building the community throughout their lives. She also highlighted the importance of collaboration among municipal, provincial, and federal governments in making the project possible.

Basswood Senior Residences is making history as Peel Region’s first purpose-built mass timber affordable rental building. The innovative construction approach utilizes advanced mass timber technology, reducing environmental impacts while creating healthier living spaces for residents. The project also incorporates geothermal heating and cooling systems, energy-efficient design features, and sustainable building practices that support long-term environmental goals.

Designed to meet modern sustainability standards, the building is expected to serve as a model for future affordable housing developments across the region. The environmentally responsible design demonstrates how affordable housing can be delivered while maintaining a strong commitment to climate-conscious construction and operational efficiency.

The residence forms a key component of Peel’s Seniors Health and Wellness Village, an innovative campus concept focused on helping seniors age comfortably and independently within their community. By combining long-term care services, adult day programs, health supports, and affordable housing in one location, the campus aims to improve quality of life and provide comprehensive support for older adults.

The need for projects such as Basswood Senior Residences has become increasingly urgent as housing affordability challenges continue to impact residents across the region. At the same time, Canada’s aging population is creating greater demand for housing options that allow seniors to remain independent while staying connected to essential services and community supports.

Located close to public transit, shopping, parks, healthcare services, and community amenities, the development will provide future residents with convenient access to everything needed for a safe, active, and healthy lifestyle.

When completed, the 198 affordable rental units will offer seniors the opportunity to remain in the communities they know and love while enjoying secure housing and access to a network of services designed to support their well-being.

Supported through funding from the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario, and Peel Region, construction of Basswood Senior Residences is expected to be completed in 2028. The project stands as a powerful example of how innovation, sustainability, and community partnership can come together to create lasting solutions for one of the region’s most pressing housing challenges.
