A tragic weekend collision has claimed the life of a 21-year-old Brampton man, prompting an outpouring of community support and nearly $10,000 in donations raised to help return the young man’s body to India.
The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning on Bramalea Road near Boston Mills Road, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). Three individuals were inside the vehicle when it veered off the road. The victim, identified by family members online as Amritpal, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second passenger, a 20-year-old Brampton resident, was rushed to a trauma centre in critical condition. The driver, Karanvir Singh, 23, also from Brampton, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was later arrested.
Singh now faces serious charges, including impaired operation causing death, impaired operation causing bodily harm, and obstructing a peace officer. He was held for a bail hearing as the investigation continues.
Amritpal, who had recently settled in Brampton, was originally from India and is survived by his father, who still resides overseas. In the wake of the tragedy, cousin Mandeep Kumar launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for funeral expenses and the repatriation of Amritpal’s body to his family in India. As of April 15, the campaign has raised nearly $10,000 from concerned members of the public.
“This is a very difficult time for our family,” Mandeep wrote in the campaign. “Amritpal had a bright future ahead of him, and we are heartbroken to lose him so suddenly. Your support means the world to us.”
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash. Witnesses or individuals with dashcam footage from the area are urged to contact Caledon OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips can also be submitted via Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.peelcrimestoppers.ca.
The devastating loss has not only shaken Amritpal’s family but also sparked a broader conversation around impaired driving and youth safety on Ontario roads.
