Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, has unveiled Grok-3, its latest chatbot, as it seeks to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Chinese AI firm DeepSeek.
The launch comes at a pivotal moment in the AI industry, just days after DeepSeek introduced a powerful open-source model, intensifying the global AI race. Musk is aggressively expanding xAI’s influence, positioning Grok-3 as a leading competitor in conversational AI.
Grok-3 is being immediately rolled out to Premium+ subscribers on X (formerly Twitter). xAI has also introduced a new subscription tier, SuperGrok, which grants access to the chatbot via its mobile app and the Grok.com website.
“Grok-3 is in a league of its own,” Musk declared during a livestream with xAI engineers, stating that the model far surpasses its predecessor, Grok-2.
In a bold move last week, Musk and a consortium of investors offered $97.4 billion to acquire OpenAI’s nonprofit assets, an offer that ChatGPT’s parent company rejected.
Musk reaffirmed xAI’s commitment to open-source AI, promising that earlier versions of Grok will be made publicly available once Grok-3 reaches full maturity, which he expects to happen in a few months.
Grok-3 introduces DeepSearch, a smart reasoning-based search engine designed for research, brainstorming, and data analysis. Unlike conventional AI chatbots, DeepSearch articulates its thought process when responding to user queries, improving transparency and accuracy.
As competition in AI intensifies, xAI is scaling up data center capacity to train even more advanced models. According to Bloomberg News, xAI is currently seeking up to $10 billion in funding, which could push the company’s valuation to $75 billion.
With Musk’s continued push for innovation and open-source AI, Grok-3 is expected to significantly challenge industry leaders in the AI landscape.
