The Honourable Ruby Sahota, Member of Parliament for Brampton North announced today a significant partnership between the federal government and the Town of Caledon to retrofit and upgrade the Caledon East Community Complex. This collaborative project, backed by a federal investment of $336,688 through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program, aims to enhance sustainability, reduce carbon emissions, and improve community infrastructure for the residents of Caledon.
In a statement shared on her official Facebook page, MP Sahota emphasized the importance of intergovernmental cooperation in achieving shared goals. “Our government is partnering with the Town of Caledon to retrofit and upgrade the Caledon East Community Complex,” she stated. “When governments come together in pursuit of common goals, we get things done for our communities. That’s why it’s important to have a federal government that works with municipalities on projects like this one.”
The retrofit project at the Caledon East Community Complex includes the replacement of over a dozen end-of-life natural gas heaters with energy-efficient electric ones, alongside the expansion of the building’s automation system. These upgrades are expected to reduce the facility’s energy consumption by 30 percent, saving 944,583 kilowatt hours of electricity annually and cutting carbon emissions by 131 tonnes—equivalent to removing 24 cars from the road each year. The improvements will also enhance indoor air quality for visitors and lower operational costs for the Town of Caledon, ensuring long-term benefits for the community.
MP Sahota highlighted the broader implications of federal-municipal partnerships, noting, “If the federal government didn’t help with necessary local projects, the full burden would fall on the municipality and by extension, the local taxpayer.” This investment alleviates financial pressure on Caledon residents while advancing environmental goals, aligning with Canada’s commitment to sustainability and community well-being.
The Caledon East Community Complex, which underwent a 52,000-square-foot expansion in 2023, is a vital hub for the community. The facility boasts a maker space, an indoor walking track, a full-size gymnasium, multi-purpose spaces, and a dedicated section for the Caledon Sports Hall of Fame. Future additions, including an outdoor rink and pavilion set to open in the winter of 2024, will further enhance its offerings. This retrofit ensures that the complex remains a sustainable and accessible space for future generations.

MP Sahota extended her gratitude to Caledon’s leadership for their proactive approach. “Thank you, Mayor Groves and Town Council for your advocacy for your community,” she said. “Our government is always going to work with motivated municipalities to get things done.” Mayor Annette Groves echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the town’s commitment to sustainable growth and community enhancement through such partnerships.
This initiative is part of the federal government’s broader efforts to support municipalities in addressing local needs while advancing national climate goals. The Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program prioritizes projects that reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency, and enhance accessibility, ensuring that communities across Canada can thrive sustainably.
Residents of Caledon are encouraged to follow updates from MP Sahota and the Town of Caledon for more information on this project and future collaborations. The federal government remains committed to working hand-in-hand with municipalities to deliver meaningful results for Canadians.
