Member of Parliament Maninder Sidhu has strongly condemned the unjustified tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump and has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Canada’s decisive response. In line with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement, Canada will impose 25% retaliatory tariffs on $155 billion worth of American goods if the U.S. tariffs take effect.
“These tariffs are an attack on Canadian workers, families, and businesses,” said MP Maninder Sidhu, adding that Canada must respond forcefully to protect its economy. “The unpredictable nature of U.S. trade policies makes it critical for Canada to use every tool available to ensure economic stability and strength.”
Prime Minister Trudeau confirmed that the retaliatory measures will be implemented immediately if the U.S. tariffs come into effect. The two-phase response plan includes:
- Phase 1: Immediate tariffs on $30 billion of U.S. goods.
- Phase 2: Additional tariffs worth $125 billion after a 21-day consultation period.
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly described Trump’s move as “an existential threat,” while National Defence Minister Bill Blair emphasized that Canada is prepared to counter the economic impact of the U.S. measures.
MP Maninder Sidhu is calling on businesses and workers in Brampton and across Canada to stand together in facing this economic challenge. He emphasized that local industries and Canadian-made products must be prioritized to reduce reliance on U.S. imports.
“Canada didn’t start this fight, but we are united, determined, and ready,” said MP Sidhu. “We will support our industries, protect Canadian jobs, and push back against unfair trade practices.”
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has also announced strong provincial measures, including:
- Halting electricity exports to U.S. states like New York, Michigan, and Minnesota.
- Banning American alcohol from Ontario liquor stores.
- Cancelling government contracts with U.S. businesses.
Ford warned that Trump’s tariffs will lead to severe economic consequences for both countries, stating, “It’s going to be an absolute disaster.”
MP Maninder Sidhu has reassured Canadians that the federal government is actively engaging in diplomatic efforts to resolve the dispute while remaining firm in defending Canada’s economic interests.
“The strength of Canada’s economy lies in our unity,” said MP Sidhu. “We will continue to fight for Canadian businesses and workers and ensure that our country remains strong in the face of any challenge.”
