An international traveller’s attempt to smuggle cocaine into Canada via a pair of shoes ended abruptly last month at Toronto Pearson International Airport, Canada’s busiest airport.
According to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), officers intercepted a passenger who arrived on May 26 from Guyana after a suspicious discovery during baggage screening. Hidden within the traveller’s luggage, authorities found multiple pairs of shoes concealing a total of 3.5 kilograms of cocaine.
The estimated street value of the seized narcotics exceeds $437,000.
CBSA officials confirmed the drugs were promptly turned over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), who also took custody of the suspect. The individual now faces drug-related charges, although no further details about the accused have been released at this time.
The bust serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by border security and law enforcement to detect and prevent illicit drugs from entering Canada. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
