Mother charged with first-degree murder after 10-year-old found dead in Barrie, police say

BARRIE, Ont. — A mother has been charged with first-degree murder following the death of her 10-year-old child, who was found inside a Barrie home on New Year’s Eve, police say.

According to Barrie Police Service, officers were called to a residence on Bayview Avenue near Little Avenue around 3 p.m. on Dec. 31 to conduct a well-being check. Inside the home, police found a 10-year-old child deceased.

The child’s mother, a 47-year-old woman, was taken to a local hospital at the time. Police said that after she was medically cleared, she was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder.

Investigators from the police service’s crime unit continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the death. Police have previously stated there is no risk to public safety.

No further details have been released, and the identity of the child is being withheld.
