Mississauga Waste Collection Transition May Be Delayed to 2027

Mississauga is preparing to take over its own curbside waste collection and recycling services under a provincial plan, but city officials are recommending the transfer be delayed until October 1, 2027.

The transition, part of a provincial government initiative to streamline municipal services in Peel, was originally set for January 1, 2026. Under the plan, Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon will each assume control of their own garbage, recycling, and organics collection services, which are currently managed by the Region of Peel.

A staff report from Sam Rogers, Mississauga’s commissioner of transportation and works, recommends the later date, citing alignment with the start of new waste collection contracts and the need for additional time to ensure a smooth transition. A regional transition committee has also endorsed the 2027 timeline.

Brampton and Caledon are considering the same revised date. Peel Regional Council will review the recommendation this Thursday.

What the Transfer Means

The change will cover curbside collection of residential waste, recycling, and organics, as well as pick-up from multi-residential buildings. However, the transition will not affect community recycling centres, which will remain under regional authority.

Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish previously welcomed the transfer of responsibility, calling it a “practical step” toward improving efficiency. “Bringing waste collection to the city level is a practical step that will allow Mississauga to better meet the unique needs of our community,” Parrish said earlier this year. She added that localized control could ultimately provide cost savings and better service coordination with other municipal programs.

Currently, Mississauga delivers more than 200 programs and services. Officials believe taking over waste collection will reduce duplication and allow for more efficient management of city operations.

If approved, residents can expect the transition to take place in fall 2027, giving municipalities nearly two years of additional preparation time.
