Mississauga is asking Peel Region to delay the planned transfer of waste collection services to the city until October 1, 2027 — nearly two years later than originally scheduled.
The shift from regional to municipal waste collection was set for January 1, 2026, but city staff say aligning the transition with the expiry of Peel’s current waste collection contract on September 30, 2027, would minimize disruption and give the city more time to prepare.
The revised timeline would also avoid overlapping with Ontario’s province-wide blue box transition in early 2026 and steer clear of peak winter waste periods, allowing Brampton and Mississauga to fully “stand up their new waste collection programs.”
The transfer of garbage collection responsibilities was first recommended by the Peel Transition Board before it was dissolved earlier this year. Brampton and Caledon are expected to begin their joint waste collection partnership in 2027.
Peel Regional Council is expected to vote on Mississauga’s request at its Thursday meeting.
