Mississauga, ON – Residents of Mississauga now have a new, free tool to encourage safer driving on their streets: “slow down” lawn signs. The City of Mississauga is making these signs available to residents who wish to display them on their properties as a visual reminder for drivers to obey speed limits in residential areas.
The initiative is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and is available to all Mississauga residents. To obtain a free “slow down” lawn sign, residents can simply contact 311 (or 905-615-4311 if outside city limits).
While the signs are a welcome addition for many, the City emphasizes that proper placement is crucial to avoid creating obstructions or hazards for road users. Signs must be placed directly on or in front of the resident’s property, ensuring they do not impede the road, median, traffic island, sidewalk, bicycle path, or multi-use trail. Additionally, they must be positioned at least three metres from any fire hydrant and secured into the ground using only the provided wire frame.
Residents are also responsible for maintaining their signs and replacing them if the wire frame becomes damaged, bent, or dislodged, the plastic covering is compromised, or any other safety issue arises that prevents it from staying secured. The City reserves the right to remove or relocate any sign deemed unsafe.
This program complements other traffic calming initiatives in Mississauga, such as the implementation of speed cushions, raised crosswalks, and Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras, all aimed at fostering a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.
