A remarkable milestone was celebrated in Mississauga as Ivan Winniczuk marked his 107th birthday, becoming one of the oldest living men in Canada and a symbol of resilience, strength and positivity.
Surrounded by family and loved ones, Winniczuk’s birthday was more than just a celebration of age — it was a tribute to a life that has endured some of the most challenging chapters of modern history. Born in Ukraine in 1919, he survived the devastating Holodomor of the 1930s, during which his family was uprooted and deported to Siberia, forcing them to make unimaginable sacrifices just to survive.
His journey through hardship continued during World War II, when he was drafted to fight. In a daring moment, he managed to escape the front lines by posing as a driver and boarding a vehicle bound for Western forces, ultimately surviving the war and beginning a new chapter of life.
In 1951, Winniczuk immigrated to Canada, settling in London with his wife Olga, where they built a home and raised their family. Though he has outlived many of his closest loved ones, his legacy continues through generations who gathered to celebrate his extraordinary life.
Family members describe him as a deeply positive and determined individual, someone who always believed he could overcome adversity. His approach to life remains simple yet powerful — staying active, avoiding harmful habits and maintaining a stress-free mindset.
According to his great-granddaughter, he still enjoys spending time with family, even engaging in creative activities like origami with younger generations. Those closest to him say his daily habits have been consistent over the decades: no drinking, no smoking and a strong commitment to staying physically and mentally active.
As he celebrates 107 years, Winniczuk’s story stands as a powerful reminder that longevity is not just about years lived, but about resilience, attitude and the ability to keep moving forward no matter the challenges life brings.
