Brampton’s Vice Chair of Economic Development, Rowena Santos, alongside Mayor Patrick Brown and the city’s Economic Development team, partnered with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority’s (TRCA) Partners in Project Green to conduct a comprehensive site assessment at Magna International’s Plastcoat facility. The focus of this initiative was to explore strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing energy conservation, and implementing sustainable practices within the facility.
Celebrating 30 years in Brampton, the Plastcoat division employs 450 individuals and is an integral part of Magna’s Exteriors Group. This facility is distinguished as one of the few globally that specializes in the tooling and stamping of plastic exteriors for automobiles. The delegation was notably impressed by Plastcoat’s innovative approaches to sustainability, which not only benefit the environment but also positively impact the company’s financial performance.
“Brampton is proud to be home to a leading global manufacturer like Magna, which continues to grow and create jobs while championing sustainability,” said Mayor Patrick Brown. “Through strong partnerships like this, we are positioning Brampton as a leader in green innovation and economic development.”
One of the standout sustainability initiatives at Plastcoat is the “Plastcoat Farm”, an on-site vegetable garden and beehive managed by employees. In its inaugural year, the garden produced a variety of vegetables, including tomatoes, peppers, and kale. Sales from the produce have raised over $500 for SickKids, the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Plans are underway to expand this initiative, with future harvests potentially being donated directly to local food banks.
Magna International has set ambitious environmental goals, aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The company has also committed to transitioning to 100% renewable electricity in its European operations by 2025 and globally by 2030. These efforts are part of Magna’s broader strategy to lead in the fight against climate change and to promote sustainable practices across its global operations.

“Magna was my first employer in Brampton, and it’s wonderful to see how the company has expanded to eight divisions in our city, making a significant contribution to our local economy and job market,” said Councillor Rowena Santos. “Beyond creating jobs, Magna is demonstrating that sustainability and economic success go hand in hand, setting an example for other businesses in Brampton and beyond.”
The collaboration with Partners in Project Green, a not-for-profit community of leaders advancing environmental action and economic prosperity across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), underscores Brampton’s commitment to fostering sustainable industrial practices. By working together, the city, TRCA, and industry leaders like Magna aim to create a greener and more prosperous future for the community.
“Our city is committed to advancing sustainability initiatives, and businesses like Magna are proving that environmental responsibility is an asset, not a burden,” added Mayor Brown. “We look forward to continuing our work with industry leaders to reduce emissions and drive innovation in Brampton.”
