Mass Shooting at South Carolina Bar Leaves 4 Dead, 20 Injured — Authorities Launch Major Investigation

Beaufort, S.C. — A quiet South Carolina island was shattered by gunfire early Sunday when a mass shooting at Willie’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island left four people dead and at least 20 others injured, local authorities confirmed.

The shooting erupted at the popular late-night spot just after midnight, drawing a large crowd. When Beaufort County sheriff’s deputies arrived, they found multiple victims with gunshot wounds and chaotic scenes as witnesses and patrons ran to nearby businesses and properties for shelter.

“Multiple victims and witnesses ran to the nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter from the gun shots,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). “This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone. We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate this incident. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones.”

Authorities confirmed that four victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while 20 others were transported to area hospitals. At least four of the injured remain in critical condition. The victims’ identities have not yet been released.

Law enforcement has not announced any arrests or identified any suspects. Investigators spent the early morning hours interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence from the crowded bar and surrounding area. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.

The shooting on St. Helena Island — a normally peaceful coastal community known for its scenic charm — has stunned residents and prompted calls for swift justice.
