Man Charged with Dangerous Driving After Vehicle Hits Building at 242 km/h

A 27-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie is facing additional charges, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, after police determined his vehicle was travelling at 242 km/h before crashing into a building last month.

The incident occurred in the early morning hours of September 10, 2025, when emergency services received a 911 call around 2:30 a.m. reporting that a vehicle had struck a building in the 100 block of Churchill Boulevard, causing extensive structural damage. Witnesses reported that the driver fled the scene immediately following the crash.

A subsequent investigation by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service’s traffic services and bail compliance unit found that the vehicle had been travelling at extreme speeds prior to impact. Police obtained a warrant for the driver’s arrest after he failed to report the collision.

Later the same day, officers located the accused at his residence. When they attempted to arrest him, he allegedly became aggressive, grabbing officers, resisting commands, and assaulting them. Police say he bit two officers, causing serious injury to one, and spat on another.

As a result of the initial arrest on September 10, the man was charged with aggravated assault of a peace officer, two counts of assaulting a peace officer, resisting a peace officer, and breach of recognizance. He was released following a bail hearing.

On September 29, following further investigation into the crash, police laid additional charges. The accused now faces charges of dangerous operation of a vehicle, failing to report an accident, driving while under suspension, and another count of breach of recognizance.

The man was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on October 6.

Sault Ste. Marie Police continue to remind drivers that excessive speed and reckless behaviour pose serious dangers to public safety, and offenders will face significant legal consequences.
