The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is bracing for its most significant snowfall of the season this weekend, with forecasts predicting up to 10 cm of accumulation across southern Ontario.
While regions to the north, such as Barrie and Muskoka, have already experienced heavy snowfall this winter, the GTA has remained relatively snow-free. However, this trend is expected to shift as a major weather system moves across the lower Great Lakes.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, a Colorado low will track into the region from the southwest, bringing snowfall starting Saturday afternoon and continuing through Sunday.
Officials at Toronto Pearson Airport have indicated they are preparing for “what could be the biggest snowstorm of the season.” The Weather Network predicts the snowfall will be light and fluffy due to colder-than-usual temperatures, with a high of -4°C on Saturday and 0°C on Sunday. Temperatures could dip as low as -11°C on Sunday night.
Up to 5 cm of snow is expected across the GTA, including Mississauga, Brampton, Toronto, Halton Region, and Durham Region, with additional accumulation continuing overnight into Sunday. Areas such as Niagara Region, Hamilton, and eastern Durham may also see significant snowfall.
The cold and snowy trend is expected to persist into mid and late February, with meteorologists warning of more potential snowstorms in the coming weeks.
