Major Milestone Reached in Brampton’s Second Hospital Project, Says William Osler Health System

Brampton— The William Osler Health System has announced a significant milestone in the construction of Brampton’s much-anticipated second hospital, marking the signing of a development phase agreement with Bird Design-Build Construction Inc. for the expansion of the Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness.

The agreement represents a crucial step in advancing the design, scheduling, and pricing for the multi-billion-dollar redevelopment project, which aims to transform Peel Memorial into a full-service hospital with expanded facilities and new health care programs.

Osler confirmed that since the official groundbreaking in March 2025, construction teams have been working on preparatory activities, including improving site access and groundwork for the upcoming development phase.

Once complete, the upgraded Peel Memorial will feature:

  • A new 24-hour Emergency Department replacing the existing Urgent Care Centre
  • 250 inpatient beds with capacity for future expansion
  • Enhanced mental health and addictions services
  • Improved rehabilitation and continuing care facilities
  • Specialized senior care programs

“This development phase agreement marks a key milestone in bringing a second hospital to Brampton,” Osler said in a statement. “It will include detailed design plans and a target construction price, helping us move closer to meeting the growing health care needs of our community.”

Ontario’s Minister of Health, Sylvia Jones, welcomed the progress, calling it an “exciting milestone in the transformation of Peel Memorial Hospital that will build vital capacity for Peel Region and ensure more families in the Brampton area have access to the care they need.”

The provincial government has already committed over $1 billion to the project, including $46.8 million in capital planning funds. The City of Brampton has also pledged support, contributing $62.5 million from its capital reserves toward its share of the $125 million local funding requirement, which also covers a new cancer care centre at Brampton Civic Hospital.

While no completion date has yet been announced, Osler says that once the development phase concludes, Bird Design-Build will have the option to finalize a project agreement and begin construction on the new patient tower.

When finished, Brampton’s second hospital is expected to dramatically expand access to emergency, mental health, and long-term care services, addressing the city’s rapidly growing population and longstanding health care capacity challenges.
