Mailboxes Targeted by Thieves in Brampton Following Canada Post Strike

Thieves wasted no time taking advantage of resumed mail delivery after the Canada Post labour dispute, targeting a neighbourhood mailbox in Brampton just one day after the strike ended.

The latest theft occurred on Good Hope Road in the northern part of the city on December 18. According to reports, the thieves pried open the community mailbox doors and stole all its contents.

A local resident, speaking anonymously, highlighted the thieves’ calculated timing. “They knew important items like cheques and passports might be there due to the backlog caused by the strike,” he said. “If it were just vandalism, they would have scattered the mail, but these guys took everything.”

Similar incidents earlier this year in Brampton’s newer neighbourhoods revealed a pattern of mailbox thefts, often exploiting the remote locations of joint mailboxes.

Peel Regional Police have not confirmed the latest incident, and Canada Post has not yet commented. However, previous reports of mailbox thefts in the Peel Region were confirmed by police, who stated they were investigating such crimes.

An unofficial Canada Post representative acknowledged that neighbourhood mailboxes are easy targets, particularly due to their secluded placements. While they advise residents to retrieve mail daily—preferably before dark—they admitted that effectively policing these crimes remains challenging.

“Unless someone is caught in the act, it’s nearly impossible to prevent,” the representative said. “Even then, with courts focused on more serious crimes, the consequences for these thefts are often minimal.”

Tips for Protecting Your Mail

  • Pick Up Daily: Collect your mail promptly to minimize the risk of theft.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: Inform local authorities immediately if you notice any tampering or suspicious behavior near mailboxes.
  • Consider Alternatives: For sensitive items like cheques or passports, opt for secure delivery options.

Mailbox theft remains a persistent issue in Brampton, leaving residents vulnerable and authorities searching for better solutions. Residents are urged to stay vigilant and take precautions to protect their mail.
