Canada Post has announced the reinstatement of full service for domestic parcel deliveries, bringing relief to Canadians after a strike disrupted operations last year. On-time service guarantees for parcels are back in place, marking a significant step toward normalcy.
However, the postal service warned that delays persist for transactional mail, including letters, bills, and statements. Delivery times for these items remain several days beyond the standard service timeline.
International Mail Backlog Continues
In addition to domestic challenges, Canada Post is still working through a significant backlog of international mail. Customers awaiting parcels and letters from abroad are advised to expect delivery delays of several days as the organization processes accumulated volumes.
Industrial Action and Government Intervention
Mail services resumed late last month after the Canada Industrial Relations Board ordered over 55,000 striking workers back to work. The order followed a directive from Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon, who determined that negotiations between Canada Post and its workers were unlikely to yield an agreement by year-end.
To address the underlying bargaining issues, MacKinnon has initiated an industrial inquiry commission tasked with investigating the dispute. The commission is expected to deliver recommendations by May 15, offering a potential path to a new agreement between the two parties.
Steps Toward Recovery
As Canada Post works to clear backlogs and meet service standards, Canadians are encouraged to remain patient during this transitional period. The restoration of domestic parcel services marks progress, but full recovery will depend on addressing the lingering delays and achieving a long-term resolution to labor disputes.
