Liberal MPs Push for Trudeau to Step Down, Set Deadline for Decision

In a closed-door meeting on October 23, 2024, several Liberal MPs urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step down as leader. The caucus meeting saw around 24 MPs sign a document calling for Trudeau’s resignation, with some pointing to potential benefits similar to the U.S. Democrats’ resurgence after President Biden’s exit. During the three-hour session, 20 MPs voiced their concerns, giving Trudeau until October 28 to decide on his leadership.

Trudeau addressed the gathering, expressing his emotional struggle with public attacks on his family. However, he made no commitment to resigning. While some MPs supported the call for change, others emphasized unity against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller acknowledged frustrations but dismissed the urgency of the situation, stating Trudeau “can handle the truth.” MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith urged Trudeau to listen to colleagues’ valid concerns and consider changes moving forward.

Ontario MP Charles Sousa and others stressed the importance of party unity, cautioning against internal dissent that could aid their political opponents. As the deadline approaches, Trudeau’s decision remains solely in his hands.
