Lexi Thompson Responds to Criticism Over Pace of Play Amid U.S. Women’s Open Exit, Clarifies Future in Pro Golf

Golf star Lexi Thompson has fired back at critics following her early exit from the U.S. Women’s Open, where both her performance and pace of play drew scrutiny. The 29-year-old LPGA veteran, known for her powerful game and emotional transparency, missed the cut after rounds of 73 and 74, marking her third consecutive missed cut at the championship.

While Thompson’s on-course results sparked disappointment among fans and analysts, it was her alleged slow play that captured widespread attention. During Thursday’s first round at Erin Hills, cameras caught fellow competitor Charley Hull waiting on the tee while Thompson took time lining up putts—triggering frustration among viewers and raising questions about her playing tempo.

In a direct and unapologetic response, Thompson addressed the criticism via Instagram, defending her conduct on the course.

“Yes, my scores weren’t what I wanted this week, but to those commenting on my pace—I’d like to make it clear: we were never out of position, never warned, and always in compliance with tournament expectations,” Thompson stated. “I take pride in being a respectful competitor. Not everyone plays at the same pace, but slow play accusations that don’t reflect reality are unfair.”

Thompson thanked USGA officials and the fans at Erin Hills for their support and reiterated her commitment to the game, denying rumors of retirement. However, she acknowledged she would be scaling back her schedule in the near future, opting to focus on events that she personally values and enjoys.

“I’m not stepping away, but I am being intentional about what events I play. I’ve been grinding out a full schedule for over a decade. It’s time to listen to myself and make decisions that keep me both competitive and fulfilled.”

Despite missing the cut, Thompson’s 2025 season has included promising finishes at the Chevron Championship and Founders Cup, offering glimpses of the form that once made her a major champion. Though she hasn’t won since 2019, her passion and drive remain evident.

Her performance and public response come at a pivotal time in her career, as both supporters and critics debate her place in the modern LPGA landscape. Still, Thompson’s resilience continues to define her journey.
