BRAMPTON, ON (August 18, 2025) – Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Chris Tanev has been named the second Captain for Mayor Patrick Brown’s Hockey Night in Brampton, joining teammate Auston Matthews in leading the star-studded matchup at the CAA Centre this Wednesday, August 20. With both current Leafs stars set to face off as captains, fans can expect one of the most exciting editions yet of Canada’s biggest charity hockey game.
Tickets for the event are officially sold out, but supporters can still contribute to the cause — raising funds for Brampton’s second hospital — by donating through hockeynightinbrampton.ca. The annual charity game brings together NHL legends and current stars, with this year’s roster featuring Gary Roberts, Ryan Getzlaf, Curtis Joseph, Mark Giordano, Owen Nolan, Jeremy Roenick, Owen Power, Blayre Turnbull, Renata Fast and many more.
Fans will also have the chance to meet hockey greats at special autograph sessions presented by 407 ETR. Beginning at 6:00 p.m., Owen Nolan, Curtis Joseph and Jeremy Roenick will be available for signings, followed at 6:30 p.m. by Darryl Sittler and Wendel Clark. Meet-and-greets are included with a ticket purchase. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the CAA Centre, 7575 Kennedy Rd. S., Brampton.
The City of Brampton extends its appreciation to the 2025 General Sponsors — AFA Systems, Amazon, Ballantry Homes, Blackthorn Group, Choice Properties, CN, Holborn Group, North American Development Group, Orlando Corporation, Policaro BMW, Rogers and Tribute Communities — for their generous support.
Player Spotlight: A Toronto native, Chris Tanev is one of the NHL’s most respected defencemen, known for his calm presence, fearless shot-blocking and ability to shut down top opponents. Over his career, he has played more than 800 NHL games with the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Dallas Stars and now the Toronto Maple Leafs, earning a reputation as a reliable leader and steady force on the ice.
Quote from Mayor Patrick Brown:
“Chris Tanev is a phenomenal addition to this year’s Hockey Night in Brampton, and I know fans will be thrilled to see him take the ice as Captain against Auston Matthews. Having two current Leafs stars leading the teams adds a whole new level of excitement and friendly competition. With the sold-out game happening this Wednesday, the energy is building, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone for an incredible night in support of building Brampton’s second hospital.”
