‘King of Clay’ Rafael Nadal to Retire in November After Davis Cup Finals

Spanish tennis icon Rafael Nadal has announced that he will retire from professional tennis following the Davis Cup finals in November 2024, closing the curtain on a remarkable 23-year career. The 38-year-old, known as the “King of Clay,” has secured 22 Grand Slam singles titles, including a record 14 French Open championships, over the course of his illustrious career.

In a heartfelt video message posted on social media, Nadal expressed his gratitude and reflected on his journey, saying, “I am retiring from professional tennis. The reality is that it has been some difficult years, these last two especially.” He added that the Davis Cup, taking place from November 19-24, would be his final tournament, which he described as “closing the circle,” as one of his early career highlights was winning the 2004 Davis Cup in Sevilla.

Nadal’s career has been marred by injuries in recent years, with the tennis legend playing only 23 matches over the past two seasons. Despite this, he won his last Roland Garros title in 2022, adding to his incredible 112-4 win-loss record at the French Open. However, the past few seasons saw him miss the 2023 French Open and suffer an early exit at this year’s tournament, losing to Alexander Zverev.

Nadal’s retirement follows the exit of fellow tennis greats Roger Federer and Serena Williams, leaving Novak Djokovic as the only active member of the sport’s “Big Three.” Reflecting on his career, Nadal thanked his family, team, and especially his uncle Toni, who coached him for much of his career. “Thanks to him, I have been able to overcome many difficult moments in my sporting life,” he said.

Addressing his fans, Nadal added, “I can’t thank you enough for what you have made me feel. Everything I have experienced has been a dream come true.”

As Nadal prepares to take his final bow in the Davis Cup, the tennis world bids farewell to one of the greatest athletes in the sport’s history.
