K9 Brooks Keeps Ajax Safe: Your Community Stays Protected as Police Thwart Auto Theft

Residents of Ajax can rest easier knowing their streets are safer, thanks to the swift action of Durham Regional Police and the heroic efforts of Police Service Dog (PSD) Brooks. In the early hours of Sunday, March 2, 2025, an attempted auto theft on Pickett Street was stopped in its tracks, ensuring your vehicles—and your peace of mind—remain secure.

Just after 4 a.m., West Division officers responded to reports of a vehicle theft in progress. As the suspects fled, multiple officers and the K9 Unit sprang into action. PSD Brooks, a star of the force, tracked and apprehended one suspect, while the second was swiftly detained without incident. This rapid response means fewer stolen cars in your neighborhood and a stronger shield against crime across Durham Region.

The arrested individuals—Ethan Derose, 19, with no fixed address, and Mohamed Naoquai, 19, from Quebec—face a slew of charges, including motor vehicle theft, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, disguise with intent, trespassing, possession of break-in tools, and possession of devices used in auto theft. Naoquai also faces additional charges for violating release orders. Both are now held for bail hearings, keeping potential threats off your streets.

“This is your police force working for you,” said a Durham Regional Police spokesperson. “Through Project Attire, part of Ontario’s Preventing Auto Thefts Grant program, we’re ramping up efforts to keep your property safe and our communities strong. PSD Brooks and our dedicated officers are proof that Ajax is no place for thieves.”
