Join the Fire Safety Movement: Brampton Aims for 50,000 Pledges on Test Your Smoke Alarm Day

In a bid to raise fire safety awareness, Brampton Fire & Emergency Services is supporting the Ontario Fire Marshal’s ‘Saved By The Beep’ campaign. On Saturday, September 28, 2024, Brampton residents are encouraged to test their smoke alarms and ensure their homes are fire-safe.

Mayor Patrick Brown emphasized the importance of fire safety in the community: “The ‘Saved By The Beep’ campaign is a fantastic initiative to help ensure every Brampton home is equipped with working smoke alarms and a solid fire escape plan. I encourage all residents to participate in Test Your Smoke Alarm Day and make fire safety a priority.”

The Test Your Smoke Alarm Day is part of a larger provincial effort to engage residents across Ontario in testing their smoke alarms and practicing fire escape plans. Brampton aims to set a record of 50,000 pledges in recognition of the city’s 50th birthday, encouraging residents to make a personal commitment to fire safety.

Nick Ruller, Fire Chief of Brampton Fire and Emergency Services, stated: “Ensuring smoke alarms are functioning properly is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to protect your home and family from fire hazards. We remind residents to test their alarms regularly and replace old units as needed.”

Jon Pegg, Ontario’s Fire Marshal, reinforced the critical message of the campaign: “‘Saved By The Beep’ is more than just a campaign; it’s a call to action. Testing smoke alarms monthly and practicing a home fire escape plan can make a life-saving difference in an emergency.”

The event will be held at Cassie Campbell Community Centre from 10 am to 2 pm, where residents can pledge to test their alarms either online or in person. Brampton Fire also offers essential fire safety tips:

  • Test smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button.
  • Replace alarms every 10 years, or earlier if they malfunction.
  • Comply with the Ontario Fire Code, which requires working smoke alarms on every level of the home and outside all sleeping areas.

Non-compliance may result in fines, so residents are encouraged to use this opportunity to ensure their homes meet fire safety standards. For more information, visit www.bramptonfire.com
