The International Cricket Council (ICC) has appointed Indian media executive Sanjog Gupta as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking a major leadership transition for the global governing body of cricket. Gupta, who previously served as CEO of Sports and Live Experiences at Indian broadcasting giant JioStar, becomes the ICC’s seventh CEO, succeeding Geoff Allardice, who stepped down in January after four years in the role.
Gupta’s selection follows a highly competitive process, with the ICC confirming it received over 2,500 applications from candidates spanning 25 countries. ICC Chairman Jay Shah praised Gupta’s extensive background in sports strategy and commercialisation, calling it “invaluable for the ICC” at a time when cricket is undergoing global transformation.
“These are exciting times for the sport as marquee events grow in stature, commercial avenues widen, and opportunities such as the women’s game scale in popularity,” Gupta said in a statement. He also highlighted cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games and rapid technological advancements as “force-multipliers” for the global cricket movement.
Gupta, who began his career in 2010 as a journalist at Star India (now JioStar), has held multiple senior roles in content, programming, and strategy. He was appointed CEO of JioStar Sports in November 2024, where he led the company’s sports division to new heights with a focus on growth, efficiency, and inclusive coverage.
The ICC credited Gupta with playing a crucial role in shaping digital-first, multi-language, and women-centric broadcasting strategies. His appointment signals the ICC’s commitment to expanding cricket’s global footprint, leveraging technology and media innovation to reach wider audiences across traditional and emerging markets.
