Japan Tops the List: Why Canadians Are Flocking There in 2026

Japan has been named the top travel destination for Canadians in 2026, according to travel search site Skyscanner, which points to affordability, rich culture and shifting travel preferences as key reasons behind the trend. Despite being a long-haul destination, average round-trip flights to Tokyo are expected to cost about $1,183 in 2026, placing Japan among the 10 cheapest international destinations for Canadians.

Beyond airfare, travellers are finding that experiences in Japan can be surprisingly budget-friendly. From theme parks and museums to historic temples, many attractions offer strong value, with some travellers noting that trips to Tokyo — including visits to Tokyo Disney — can cost less than vacations to popular U.S. destinations.

Japan’s blend of tradition and modern life continues to be a major draw. Visitors are attracted to everything from neighbourhood ramen shops and bustling izakayas to centuries-old temples and cutting-edge urban design. Natural landmarks such as Mount Fuji and the iconic cherry blossom season add to the appeal, turning entire cities into seasonal celebrations.

Another growing factor is the appeal of everyday experiences. Skyscanner data shows many Canadians now seek hyper-local moments while travelling, and Japan’s famous convenience stores, supermarkets and vending machines have become attractions in their own right. Together, these factors have helped Japan secure its spot as the must-visit destination for Canadians in 2026.
